How to Apply

Our Recruitment Process

We aim to make the application process as simple and quick as possible, but overseas candidates should be aware that it can often take many months to go from applying for a role with us, to moving and starting work in the Falkland Islands.

Candidates based in the Falkland Islands may apply online or can also choose to collect and submit a paper-based application form in person at the HR Department, Cable Cottage, Stanley.

Closing dates will be listed on the role and shortlisting usually takes place within one week of the closing date.

We will then try to schedule interviews. Assessment will depend on the role and may involve one or more interviews and possibly a presentation or assessment activity. For overseas candidates, interviews are often conducted by telephone or video conference or sometimes in person at the Falkland Islands Government Office in London.

Once a preferred candidate is identified, they will be contacted with an employment offer and asked to start our Pre-Employment Checks. For individuals without Falkland Island Status or Permanent Residency, this will involve steps to secure a Work Permit, including a full Police Check and Medical and Dental Assessments. We recommend that you do not give notice to your current employer until a work permit is secured, as unfortunately we do sometimes have to withdraw an offer at this stage.

Once all the checks are complete and a work permit is secured, we will start planning for your arrival in the Falkland Islands by booking flights.

You will usually start work on the first working day after your flight and will be given time to find your way around Stanley and to set up accounts with the Bank, Telecoms provider and other utilities.

If you have any questions about the application process or face an issue in making an application, please email recruitment@sec.gov.fk for more information.

Medical & Dental Checks

All overseas contractors and any accompanying dependents will be required to complete medical and dental assessments before coming to the Falkland Islands as part of the Immigration process.

Residents are given access to free health services in the Falkland Islands, which includes GP and dental care, emergency treatment and consultations with visiting specialists. Arrangements are also in place to provide treatment overseas for more serious or urgent needs. Some services including spectacles, dentures and cosmetic dentistry do incur a fee.

However, complex or serious long-term conditions can be expensive or difficult to support in a remote community and the hospital may not be equipped or have the necessary staff to manage these needs. Overseas contractors and their dependents need to be medically fit to live and work here, without placing an unreasonable burden on limited local resources.

You will need to declare any medical conditions on your application form. Although pre-existing conditions will not be taken into account during shortlisting for a role, it is important the implications of any health conditions are understood before you can take up post in the Falklands. If you have a pre-existing condition which may impact your ability to get a work permit, it is better for everyone involved that this is identified early on in the process.

Criminal Record Checks

As part of the immigration process, all overseas contractors and their dependents will be subject to criminal record checks. Local candidates will also be subject to a Royal Falkland Islands Police Check.

You should declare any existing convictions on your application form. Undeclared convictions may be picked up in the pre-employment checks process and if identified, any provisional offer will be withdrawn. Information which is later found to be false would be subject to disciplinary procedures and may result in dismissal.

Candidates applying for ‘Sensitive’ posts, such as those working with children, elderly or vulnerable people, are also expected to declare any cautions, bind overs or spent convictions in their application and may be subject to additional checks (e.g. DBS Enhanced Disclosure).
